Explanation

There he regains the understanding he had developed in his former body, and from that point he strives once more for perfection, O joy of the Kurus. Progress made in one life is not lost; it returns as a natural inclination and understanding, and the journey continues from where it stopped.

Spiritual progress is not lost at death. The 'buddhi-saṃyoga', the bond with the wisdom gained in the previous life, returns, and the seeker starts not from zero but from where he left off. Commentators use this verse to explain why some people feel a natural pull towards spiritual life from an early age, or learn certain truths with surprising ease. The phrase 'strives once more' is important: past progress gives a head start, but effort is still required.
