Explanation
But the yogi who strives with great effort, cleansed of all faults and perfected through many births, then reaches the supreme goal. No effort is lost along the way. Even if the journey takes several lifetimes, sincere and steady striving finally reaches its end.
This verse concludes the answer to Arjuna's question in 6.37. The journey may span many lives, but it does reach its goal. The word 'prayatnāt', with diligent effort, contrasts with the 'ayati', the one who did not strive enough, of 6.37: what was weak becomes strong over time. Commentators see here the Gita's long view of spiritual growth, patient and cumulative. A similar idea appears in 7.19, where the wise one reaches Krishna 'at the end of many births'.
