Explanation

Among thousands of human beings, hardly one strives for perfection; and even among those who strive and succeed, hardly one knows me in truth. Krishna stresses how rare and precious the knowledge he is about to give really is. Sincerity matters more than numbers.

The verse explains why Arjuna should listen attentively. Shankara reads siddhānām as those who strive, regarded as accomplished because they have begun; even among them few reach true knowledge. Ramanuja reads it as those who have realised the self, among whom few go further to know the Lord as he is. The verse is not meant to discourage; it shows the value of the teaching and the need for sincerity, and is often quoted to emphasise how uncommon deep spiritual commitment is.

Living it today

Do not measure your path by how many others walk it; sincere effort is rare and worth keeping even when you feel alone.
