Explanation
That supreme Person, O Partha, within whom all beings dwell and by whom this whole universe is pervaded, is attained through undivided devotion. The goal described so loftily is reached by the simple means of wholehearted love. God holds all and fills all.
Having described the supreme goal in impersonal terms, Krishna now names it as the Purusha, the Person, and states the means: ananya bhakti, devotion that has no other object. Ramanuja makes this a central text, holding that loving devotion is the direct path to the Lord. Shankara reads the devotion as single-minded knowledge of the Self. The idea that all beings dwell within God, and God pervades all, is developed further in 9.4–6. Many traditions see the verse as uniting the paths of knowledge and love.
