Explanation

Whoever leaves the body at the time of death remembering me alone attains my being; of this there is no doubt.

The next verses explain that what we think of at the end depends on what we have dwelt on throughout life (8.6) — so Krishna says, "remember me at all times, and fight" (8.7). This is why chanting God's name daily, and at a loved one's last moments, matters so much in Hindu tradition.

Living it today

Make remembrance of God a daily habit, so that it becomes natural at every moment — including the last.
