Explanation
I give heat as the sun. I hold back the rain and I send it forth. I am immortality and also death. I am both being and non-being, O Arjuna. Nothing, not even the opposites of life, falls outside God.
Krishna includes even the opposites of life within himself: heat and rain, life and death, being and non-being. Nothing falls outside God. Shankara explains sat and asat as the manifest and unmanifest, or effect and cause. Ramanuja takes sat as what exists now and asat as what is past or yet to come, both governed by the Lord. The verse prepares for the vision of Chapter 11, where Arjuna sees Krishna as both creator and destroyer. It invites a faith that holds even loss within the divine.
