About Baidyanath Temple

Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, Jharkhand, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and among the most visited Shiva shrines in eastern India. Shiva is worshipped here as Baidyanath, the divine healer. The temple complex is also revered as a Shakti Peetha, where the heart of Sati is believed to have fallen. Every year during the month of Shravan, millions of Kanwariya pilgrims walk barefoot about 105 km from Sultanganj in Bihar, carrying Ganga water to offer to the Jyotirlinga.

Legend says the demon king Ravana performed intense penance to Shiva and was granted a linga to carry to Lanka, on condition that it must not be placed on the ground. On the way the gods arranged for him to set it down here, and it stayed fixed at Deoghar forever. Because Shiva is believed to have healed Ravana's wounds, he came to be called Baidyanath, the Lord of physicians. The temple has been a major pilgrimage site for centuries and was patronised by local rulers over time.

The main temple is a tall stone structure with a pyramid-shaped spire topped by a Panchshool, a five-pointed trident, instead of the usual single trident. Around it stand about twenty other temples dedicated to Parvati, Kali, Annapurna and other deities, all within one large courtyard. Devotees pour Ganga water and offer bel leaves directly on the linga, which sits in a small, crowded sanctum.
