About Jagannath Temple, Ranchi

The Jagannath Temple stands on a small hill at Jagannathpur, in the Dhurwa area of southern Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. Lord Jagannath is worshipped here with Balabhadra and Subhadra, just as at Puri, and the temple is modelled on the great shrine in Odisha on a smaller scale. It is one of the best-known temples of Jharkhand and the centre of a Rath Yatra that has been held for more than three centuries. Locally it is often called the Jagannathpur Mandir, and the surrounding neighbourhood takes its name from it.

The temple was built by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, ruler of Barkagarh, and was completed in 1691. Over the centuries it became a shared place of worship for many communities of the Chotanagpur plateau, and its festival is known for drawing tribal and non-tribal devotees together. The old structure collapsed in August 1990 and was rebuilt, reopening in 1992, so what visitors see today is largely the restored temple on the original site.

The shrine is built in the Kalinga style, with a curved tower over the sanctum and a smaller hall in front, rising above the trees on its hillock. Devotees can climb a flight of steps to the top or use a motorable road. Every year in the month of Ashadha, the deities are brought down in chariots to the Mausibari, a smaller temple nearby, and return about nine days later, as at Puri. A large fair spreads across the ground below the hill during this time, with stalls of handicrafts, farm tools and local foods.
