About Jambukeswarar Temple

The Jambukeswarar Temple stands at Thiruvanaikaval on Srirangam island in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu, close to the Ranganathaswamy temple. It is one of the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams and represents the element of water (appu or jala). Shiva is worshipped here as the Appu Lingam, and his consort is the goddess Akilandeswari, whose shrine is one of the most important Devi shrines in Tamil Nadu. The temple is also a Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised in the Tevaram hymns.

Tradition says Parvati came to earth as Akilandeswari and made a lingam from the water of the Kaveri under a jambu (rose-apple) tree, where Shiva appeared to her. The name Thiruvanaikaval, "the sacred place protected by an elephant", comes from a well-known legend: an elephant worshipped the lingam with water and flowers, while a spider spun a web over it to shield it from falling leaves. The two quarrelled and both died, and Shiva blessed them; the spider is said to have been reborn as the early Chola king Kochenganan, who built this and many other Shiva temples. Over the centuries the temple was expanded by the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara and Nayak rulers.

The temple is large, with five enclosures and several gopurams, long pillared corridors and a thousand-pillared hall. The sanctum of Jambukeswarar is low, and its lingam stands below the level of the water table; a small spring keeps seeping up around it, even when it is drained. The goddess Akilandeswari wears large earrings that tradition links to Adi Shankara. A noted custom is that the priest performing the noon puja dresses as a woman, recalling Parvati's own worship of Shiva here.
