About Meenakshi Temple

Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple stands at the heart of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, with the old city built around it in squares. It is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and her consort Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva. The temple is famous for its towering gopurams covered with thousands of colourful sculptures, and is one of the most visited temples in India. Here the goddess is the main deity, and devotees traditionally worship her first.

Legend says Meenakshi was born to the Pandya king Malayadhwaja as a girl with three breasts, which would disappear when she met her destined husband. She ruled Madurai as a warrior queen, and on meeting Shiva at Kailasa, she recognised him; they were married in Madurai with Vishnu giving the bride away. The temple has ancient roots and is praised in Tamil literature, but much of the present structure was rebuilt under the Nayak rulers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The complex has 14 gopurams, the tallest being the southern tower at about 52 metres. Inside are the Potramarai Kulam (Golden Lotus Tank), long pillared corridors with painted ceilings, and the Thousand Pillar Hall, now a temple art museum. Look for the musical pillars, the Ashta Shakti Mandapam and the shrines of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar.
