About Kanyakumari Temple

The Bhagavathy Amman Temple, also called the Kumari Amman Temple, stands at Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of mainland India in Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Devi Kanya Kumari, the goddess as a young virgin, worshipped as a form of Parvati. The temple sits near the shore where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet. It is revered as a Shakti Peetha in several traditions, and pilgrims often combine darshan with a holy dip at the confluence and sunrise or sunset views over the sea.

According to legend, the goddess took the form of a young maiden to destroy the demon Banasura, who could only be killed by a virgin. She wished to marry Lord Shiva of Suchindram, but the wedding did not take place, as the sage Narada arranged for dawn to appear falsely before the auspicious hour. The goddess remained a virgin and stands here forever in penance. The temple is traditionally said to have been established by Parashurama. Swami Vivekananda is said to have meditated on a rock offshore after seeking her blessings.

The temple is built in the Dravidian style with stone walls and a quiet inner sanctum. The goddess holds a rosary and is adorned with a sparkling diamond nose ring, which legend says once shone so brightly that sailors mistook it for a lighthouse. For this reason, the eastern door facing the sea is kept closed except on a few special occasions in the year.
