About Jogulamba Temple
The Jogulamba Temple stands at Alampur in Jogulamba Gadwal district of Telangana, on the bank of the Tungabhadra river close to where it joins the Krishna. The goddess Jogulamba, also called Yogamba, is a fierce form of Shakti. Alampur is often called Dakshina Kashi, the Varanasi of the south, and the temple shares its riverside setting with the famous Nava Brahma group of Shiva temples.
Jogulamba is counted as the fifth of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas named in the hymn attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. Tradition says that the upper teeth of Sati fell here, though accounts differ in other lists. The original temple is said to have been destroyed in the late 14th century during wars in the region; according to local accounts the image of the goddess was protected and kept for centuries in the nearby Bala Brahmeswara temple. A new temple was built for her on the old site and consecrated in 2005. The Nava Brahma temples nearby were built by the Badami Chalukya kings in the 7th and 8th centuries and are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The present Jogulamba temple is a stone shrine in the South Indian style, with a gopuram and a pillared hall leading to the sanctum. The goddess is shown seated, with a lizard, scorpion and skull among the symbols around her, a sign of her fierce nature; devotees believe she grants relief from troubles and protection to the household. Around the temple lie the nine Nava Brahma shrines, with their curving northern-style towers and fine carvings, and a site museum with sculptures from the area.
