About Yadadri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple
The Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple stands on a hill at Yadagirigutta, also called Yadadri, in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, Telangana, about 60 km from Hyderabad. Lord Narasimha, the man-lion avatar of Vishnu, is worshipped here together with Goddess Lakshmi. The deities are in a cave sanctum inside the hill. The temple is the most visited Narasimha shrine in Telangana and an important centre of Vaishnava worship in the state.
According to temple tradition, the sage Yada, son of the sage Rishyasringa, performed long penance on this hill, and Narasimha appeared to him. The Lord is said to have shown himself in five forms, Jwala Narasimha, Yogananda Narasimha, Gandabheruda Narasimha, Ugra Narasimha and Lakshmi Narasimha, so the place is called a Pancha Narasimha kshetra. The hill is named Yadagiri after the sage. The shrine is ancient, though few early historical records survive. Between about 2016 and 2022 the Telangana government carried out a complete reconstruction of the hilltop complex, and the new temple opened for worship in March 2022.
The rebuilt temple is made largely of black granite, carved with images of deities, avatars and scenes from the Puranas. Tall gopurams in the Dravidian style rise over the entrances, and pillared halls, corridors and a kalyana mandapa surround the cave sanctum, which keeps its original natural rock setting where the forms of Narasimha are seen. A broad ghat road, steps and queue complexes have been built around the hill, along with a temple tank and a separate Shiva shrine on the hill.
