About Kanaka Durga Temple
The Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam, popularly called the Kanaka Durga Temple, stands on Indrakeeladri hill on the banks of the Krishna river in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The goddess Kanaka Durga, a golden-hued form of Durga, is the presiding deity, and Lord Shiva is worshipped beside her as Malleswara Swamy. It is the most important temple of Vijayawada and one of the best-known goddess shrines in the Telugu states. Some devotees regard it as a Shakti Peetha, though it does not appear in most traditional lists.
Tradition says the goddess appeared on this hill to destroy the demon Mahishasura and to protect the region, and that the image here is swayambhu (self-manifested). Another legend tells that Arjuna performed penance on Indrakeeladri and received the Pashupata weapon from Shiva, who appeared to him as a hunter; the name Vijayawada, place of victory, is linked with this story in local belief. Adi Shankaracharya is also said by tradition to have visited and installed a Sri Chakra here. The temple has been patronised by many dynasties of the region over the centuries.
The temple is reached by a ghat road, steps or an elevator from the base of the hill. The main shrine holds a bright, richly decorated image of the goddess with eight arms, standing on the demon Mahishasura. The Malleswara Swamy shrine stands nearby, and the hilltop offers views of the Krishna river and the Prakasam Barrage. During Dasara the goddess is decorated each day as a different form, such as Bala Tripura Sundari, Annapurna, Saraswati and Mahishasuramardini, and on Vijayadashami the deities are taken out on a decorated float on the Krishna river.
