About Tirumala Venkateswara Temple
The Sri Venkateswara Temple sits on the Tirumala hills above Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. It is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu lovingly called Balaji, Srinivasa and Govinda. It is one of the most visited places of worship on earth, with tens of thousands of pilgrims each day, and one of the wealthiest. The temple is revered as a Divya Desam praised by the Alvar saints, and is famous for its laddu prasadam and the tradition of offering one's hair.
Legend says Lord Vishnu came to the Venkatadri hill during Kali Yuga to bless humanity, and married Goddess Padmavati, daughter of the local king Akasa Raja. To pay for the wedding he took a loan from Kubera, and devotees' offerings are said to help repay it. The temple has a history of over a thousand years, and received rich patronage from the Pallavas, Cholas and the Vijayanagara kings, especially Krishnadevaraya. Today it is managed by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).
The sanctum is crowned by the gold-plated Ananda Nilayam vimana. Inside, the standing image of Lord Venkateswara is richly decorated with jewels. Pilgrims pass through the Mahadwaram gateway, the Dhvajastambham and pillared mandapams before reaching the Bangaru Vakili (golden door). Within the temple area are shrines to Varaha Swamy and the Swami Pushkarini sacred tank, where pilgrims traditionally bathe.
