About Karpaka Vinayakar Temple, Pillayarpatti

The Karpaka Vinayakar Temple, widely known simply as Pillayarpatti, is in the village of that name in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu, about 12 km from Karaikudi in the Chettinad region. It is dedicated to Ganesha as Karpaka Vinayakar, the wish-fulfilling Vinayaka, and is among the most famous Ganesha temples in South India. It is one of the nine ancestral temples of the Nagarathar (Nattukottai Chettiar) community and draws large crowds, especially on Vinayaka Chaturthi.

At the heart of the temple is a cave cut into a low rocky hill. Inscriptions and style date this core to around the 7th century, in the time of the early Pandyas, and some scholars argue that parts may be older, based on an archaic inscription in the cave. The Ganesha image, about six feet tall, is carved in relief on the rock. It is unusual in having only two arms and a trunk that curls to the right, which gives him the name Valampuri Vinayakar. A 7th-century inscription nearby calls him Desi Vinayakar. The cave also has a rock-cut Shiva linga, worshipped as Thiruveesar, and a relief that scholars have identified in different ways. Over the following centuries rulers and the Nagarathar community added halls, shrines and towers.

Today the cave sits within a large temple complex with a colourful gopuram, spacious pillared halls painted with images, shrines to Shiva and the goddess, and a big temple tank. Because the Ganesha is carved into the rock, there is no path to walk around the sanctum. The temple is famous for the giant modak offered to Ganesha at the end of the Vinayaka Chaturthi festival, and for the chariot procession during the celebrations.
