About Kateel Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple

The Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple at Kateel, or Kateelu, is in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, about 20 km from Mangaluru. It stands on a small islet in the middle of the Nandini river, surrounded by greenery, which gives it one of the most beautiful settings of any temple on the coast. The goddess Durgaparameshwari is worshipped here, and thousands of devotees visit every day. Kateel is counted among the holiest temple towns of coastal Karnataka, alongside places such as Kollur, Udupi, Dharmasthala and Kukke Subramanya, which are reachable from here by public transport.

The name is explained in Tulu: kati means centre, and Kateel lies midway along the Nandini, between its source at Kanakagiri and its mouth at Pavanje. The goddess at Kateel is revered as Bhramari, the form of Devi associated with bees. In the Devi Bhagavata Purana, the demon Arunasura won a boon that no weapon, man, woman, two-legged or four-legged being could kill him; Devi then took the form of Bhramari, surrounded by swarms of bees and other insects, and they destroyed him and his army. Devotees connect this story with the goddess of Kateel.

The temple is reached by crossing to the islet in the river, and its riverside setting, with water flowing on both sides, is one of the first things visitors notice. Kateel is especially famous for Yakshagana, the night-long dance-drama of coastal Karnataka performed in the tenkutittu (southern) style. The temple maintains six Yakshagana troupes, called melas, and devotees often sponsor a performance as an offering, sometimes at their own homes. The temple also runs educational institutions, including a first grade college and a Sanskrit postgraduate research centre, showing its long role in the cultural life of the Tulu-speaking coast.
