About Kukke Subramanya Temple

The Kukke Subramanya Temple stands in the village of Subramanya in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, on the banks of the Kumaradhara river and surrounded by the forests of the Western Ghats. Lord Subramanya (Kartikeya, Murugan) is worshipped here as the lord of all serpents, and the temple is one of the most visited in the state. Devotees come especially to perform rites for relief from sarpa dosha, a condition that tradition links to harm done to snakes, and to pray for children, health and family harmony.

According to legend, the serpent king Vasuki took refuge here under Subramanya's protection when Garuda was hunting the serpents. Tradition also says that after defeating the demons Taraka and Shurapadma, Subramanya came to the nearby Kumara Parvatha peak and married Devasena, daughter of Indra, here. The place is counted among the sacred sites associated with Parashurama on the west coast. Worship is conducted according to the Madhva tradition, and the temple has long ties with the Tulu Nadu region and its communities.

The temple follows the regional style of coastal Karnataka, with sloping roofs and an inner courtyard around the shrine. In the sanctum the deity is seen with Vasuki and the serpent Shesha, and devotees view him across an open hall. Pilgrims customarily bathe in the Kumaradhara river before darshan. Close by stand the Adi Subramanya shrine, where an anthill is worshipped, and several other shrines. Rites such as Sarpa Samskara, Ashlesha Bali and Naga Pratishtha are performed here and are usually booked in advance.
