About Mahabaleshwar Temple

The Mahabaleshwar Temple stands in the coastal town of Gokarna in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, close to the Arabian Sea. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Mahabaleshwara, the mighty one, in the form of the Atmalinga. Gokarna is one of the most sacred Shiva kshetras of South India and is often called Dakshina Kashi, the Kashi of the south. Pilgrims come here for darshan, for ancestral rites on the beach and at Koti Teertha, and for the great festival of Maha Shivaratri.

The temple's legend is told in the Puranas. Ravana, after long penance, received Shiva's own linga, the Atmalinga, on the condition that it must not be set down before he reached Lanka. The gods, worried about Ravana's growing power, sought Ganesha's help. Disguised as a young boy, Ganesha offered to hold the linga while Ravana performed his evening prayers, then placed it on the ground. The linga became fixed, and when Ravana tried with all his strength to pull it out, he could not move it, so Shiva here is called Mahabala, the one of great strength. Gokarna is also counted among the seven sacred places of the coast linked with Parashurama, and is mentioned in the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

The temple is built of stone in a simple coastal Dravidian style, with a pillared hall and a sanctum where the linga is set deep inside a stone pedestal; devotees see and touch its top through an opening. The town's main street leads from the temple to the beach, and a short walk away is the Maha Ganapati temple honouring Ganesha's role in the legend. Large wooden chariots are drawn through the streets at Shivaratri.
