About Sri Raghavendra Swamy Matha, Mantralayam
Mantralayam is a pilgrim village in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, on the banks of the Tungabhadra river close to the Karnataka border. It is known above all for the Brindavana, the sacred samadhi shrine, of Sri Raghavendra Tirtha, the 17th-century Madhva saint whom devotees lovingly call Rayaru or Guru Raghavendra. Lakhs of people visit every year from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and beyond, seeking his blessings for every kind of need; devotees speak of him as Kaliyuga Kamadhenu and Kalpataru, the wish-fulfilling cow and tree of this age.
Raghavendra Tirtha was born Venkatanatha around 1595 at Bhuvanagiri in present-day Tamil Nadu. A disciple of Sudhindra Tirtha, he became pontiff of the matha descended from Madhvacharya and was celebrated as a scholar, writer and spiritual guide. By tradition he entered the Brindavana at Mantralayam in 1671. The matha he led was earlier known as the Kumbakonam or Vijayindra Matha and later by his name; in recent decades Mantralayam has become its headquarters. It is counted among the three premier mathas of the Dvaita tradition, together with the Uttaradi and Vyasaraja mathas.
At the centre of the matha complex is the Brindavana, where devotees offer prayers, walk pradakshina and sit for quiet chanting. The matha also worships the images of Moola Rama, Digvijaya Rama and Jaya Rama, the ancient deities of its lineage. The complex runs annadana for pilgrims, a Veda pathashala, a goshala with more than a thousand cows and a museum of Dasa literature. The ghats along the Tungabhadra are a short walk away, and many pilgrims bathe in the river before darshan. Lodging run by the matha and private choultries surrounds the shrine.
