About Marudhamalai Murugan Temple
The Marudhamalai Murugan Temple stands on a hill at the foothills of the Western Ghats, about 12–15 km west of the centre of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Lord Murugan is worshipped here as Marudhachalamurthy, also called Marudhamalai Andavar and Dandayudhapani. Like many Murugan shrines, it is a hill temple, and devotees often call it the seventh abode of Murugan, after the traditional six Arupadai Veedu. It is the most popular temple in the Coimbatore area and is managed by the state Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
The hill takes its name from the marudha tree (Terminalia arjuna) that grows on its slopes, together with malai, meaning hill. The temple is very old, and local tradition links it with references in early Tamil literature, though the present structures are much later. A strong tradition connects the hill with Pambatti Siddhar, one of the eighteen Tamil Siddhars, who is said to have done penance here. Legend says Murugan appeared to him in the form of a snake and later with his consorts Valli and Devasena. The Siddhar's cave lies just below the temple, and the springs on the hill, such as Marudha Theertham, are believed to have healing qualities.
Visitors can climb the hill by a long flight of steps, passing small shrines along the way, or take the ghat road by car or temple bus. At the top, the temple has a tall gopuram, a main sanctum for Murugan and shrines for other deities, with wide views of Coimbatore below. Unusually for a hill temple of Murugan, it faces east. On many evenings a decorated chariot carrying the deity is drawn around the temple, a sight that draws many devotees.
