About Murudeshwar Temple

The Murudeshwar Temple stands on Kanduka Giri, a small hill jutting into the Arabian Sea at the town of Murudeshwar in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. Water surrounds the hill on three sides, and the temple, its tall entrance tower and a giant seated statue of Lord Shiva can be seen from far along the coast. Shiva is worshipped here as Murudeshwara. For many families travelling the coastal route between Goa and Mangaluru, the temple is both a pilgrimage and a memorable sight.

The temple's story is tied to the legend of the Atmalinga, told in the Puranas. Ravana is said to have won Shiva's own linga through penance, on the condition that it must never be placed on the ground. Through Ganesha's clever trick the linga was set down at Gokarna and became fixed there. In anger Ravana tore away the coverings of the linga and flung them in different directions. Tradition says the cloth that covered it fell at Murudeshwar, which is why this shrine is counted among the holy places linked with the Atmalinga. The original shrine is old, but most of the present complex was rebuilt in the late 20th century.

Visitors enter through a 20-storey Raja Gopura, among the tallest temple towers in India; a lift takes visitors up for a wide view of the sea and the statue. Inside is the sanctum with the linga. Higher up the hill stands a huge painted statue of Shiva, about 37 m (123 ft) tall, seated in meditation, one of the tallest Shiva statues in the world. Around the hill are sculptures showing the Atmalinga story and the Bhagavad Gita scene of Krishna and Arjuna.
