About Nellaiappar Temple
The Nellaiappar Temple stands at the heart of Tirunelveli, near the Thamirabarani river in southern Tamil Nadu. It is a twin temple: one part is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Nellaiappar (also called Venuvananathar), worshipped as a linga, and the other to his consort Parvati as Kanthimathi Amman. Covering about 14 acres within high walls, it is one of the largest temples in the state. It is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised in the Tevaram hymns of the Nayanar saints, and the city takes its name from the legend of the temple.
Tradition says the area was once a forest of bamboo (venu), which gave the Lord the name Venuvananathar. A well-known legend tells of a devotee whose paddy (nel), spread out to dry, was protected from a sudden downpour by the Lord, who fenced it (veli) with his grace; this is said to be the origin of the names Nellaiappar and Tirunelveli. Vishnu is also honoured here, as tradition says he witnessed the divine wedding of Shiva and Parvati. Historically, the core shrines are linked to the Pandya king Nindraseer Nedumaran of the 7th century, with additions by later Pandya, Chola and Nayak rulers. The two temples were joined in 1647 by the Sangili (chain) Mandapam.
The complex has tall gopurams, long corridors and many pillared halls. The Mani Mandapam is known for its musical pillars, which ring with different notes when tapped, though visitors are asked not to strike them. The temple also has the Tamra Sabha, or copper hall, counted among the five sabhas where Nataraja is said to have danced. A hundred-pillared Vasantha Mandapam stands in a flower garden, and a sacred tank lies within the walls.
