About Samayapuram Mariamman Temple
The Arulmigu Sri Mariamman Temple at Samayapuram lies on the Tiruchirappalli–Chennai highway, about 12 km north of the centre of Tiruchirappalli. Mariamman, regarded as a form of Adi Parashakti, is the mother goddess whom devotees turn to for protection from illness, especially fevers and poxes, and for the fulfilment of vows. It is among the richest temples in Tamil Nadu by offerings and one of the busiest, with the heaviest crowds on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays, the days held sacred to Mariamman. The temple is administered by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
Its early history is not well recorded, though local people are believed to have worshipped the goddess here for centuries. One story says the goddess was once at Srirangam, until a priest had her image moved away; passers-by later found it and built a shrine. Another account links a temple here to a vow made by Vijayanagara forces camped in the area. King Vijayaraya Chakravarti is credited with building the present temple in the early 18th century. The area also saw fighting between British and French forces during the Carnatic Wars. A new panchaloha festival image was given in 1991.
The temple is built in the Tamil style, with a gold-plated vimana over the sanctum and a painting of Mariamman on the ceiling of the entrance hall. A long corridor lined with shops leads in. The main image is unusual: it is made of sand and clay mixed with medicinal herbs, so the sacred bath is given to a small stone image placed in front of it. Devotees offer mavilakku, a sweet lamp of rice flour, jaggery and ghee, as well as salt and neem leaves. During festivals some devotees fulfil vows by walking on fire or carrying hot pots, and the Poochoriyal flower-offering festival is especially famous.
