About Golden Temple Vellore
The Sri Lakshmi Narayani Golden Temple, known as Sripuram, is a modern temple at Thirumalaikodi, about 8–10 km south of Vellore in Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi Narayani (Mahalakshmi), the goddess of wealth and wellbeing. The temple's vimana and mandapam are covered in gold, making it one of the most striking temples in South India. It glows especially beautifully in the evening when lit up, and draws large numbers of visitors from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
Sripuram was built by the Sri Narayani Peedam, a spiritual and charitable organisation led by Sri Sakthi Amma. The temple was consecrated in August 2007. Its gold covering, often reported to use about 1,500 kg of gold, was crafted by skilled artisans who hand-worked gold foil onto copper sheets. The organisation also runs charitable activities such as a hospital and social service programmes in the area. Today the temple is one of the best-known landmarks of the Vellore region.
The golden temple stands at the centre of a large landscaped complex. Visitors walk a long star-shaped path, about 1.5 km, lined with gardens and boards carrying spiritual messages, before reaching the sanctum. Water bodies surround the temple, and the gold reflects in them, especially after dusk. Prasad and drinking water are available along the route.
