About Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple
The Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple stands in Thanesar, the old town of Kurukshetra in Haryana. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Sthaneshwar, the lord of the place, and the name of the town itself, Thanesar, comes from Sthaneshwar. Kurukshetra is the land of the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, and this temple is one of the oldest and holiest of its many tirthas. Pilgrims believe that a visit to Kurukshetra is not complete without darshan here.
According to tradition, the Pandavas, together with Lord Krishna, worshipped Shiva at this spot and received his blessings for victory before the war of the Mahabharata. Another legend says that a king was cured of leprosy after bathing in the small tank beside the temple, whose water is still considered holy. Thanesar was the capital of the Pushyabhuti dynasty, and in the 7th century it was the seat of King Harshavardhana, whose court poet Banabhatta described the city. The present temple building is much later than these legends and has been restored several times.
The temple has a Nagara-style shikhara with an amalaka on top, rising over the sanctum, which holds a Shiva linga. Close by is the sacred tank, and a small gurdwara is also located nearby, linked with a visit of a Sikh Guru, showing how this site is honoured by more than one tradition. The complex is modest in size but busy with devotees, especially on Mondays and during the month of Shravan. The calm courtyard and old trees give it a quiet, timeless feel.
