About Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple
The Thanumalayan, or Sthanumalayan, Temple stands in Suchindram in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, about 11 km from Kanyakumari and 7 km from Nagercoil. Its deity is a single form uniting the three great gods: Sthanu for Shiva, Mal for Vishnu and Ayan for Brahma. Because of this, it is revered by both Shaiva and Vaishnava devotees. The temple spreads over about two acres, holds around thirty shrines and blends Tamil Dravidian building with Kerala features, reflecting the area's long history under the rulers of Travancore. It is now administered by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
According to legend, Indra was freed from a curse here, and the name Suchindram is linked to a word meaning purification; it is believed that Indra still comes each night to worship at the Ardhajama puja. Another story tells that Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma came to test the virtue of Anasuya, wife of the sage Atri, and were turned into infants; once restored, they appeared here as lingas. History records Chola-era inscriptions from the 10th century, and the present masonry structure is attributed to the 9th century. Madurai Nayak kings renovated it in the 17th century, and the Travancore Maharajas gave generous endowments.
The eastern gopuram, more than 40 metres tall and covered with sculpted figures, dominates the town. In the Alankara Mandapam stand the famous musical pillars, four great clusters each carved from a single stone, whose slender columns ring with different notes when tapped; they are now protected by grilles. More than a thousand carved pillars fill the halls, many showing scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. A huge monolithic Hanuman, about 6.7 metres tall, was buried in 1740 for safety and found again in 1930. A large Nandi and a 16th-century Navaratri Mandapam in Kerala style are also notable.
