About Thillai Nataraja Temple

The Thillai Nataraja Temple is at the heart of Chidambaram, a temple town in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. It is one of the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams and represents space or ether (akasha). Shiva is worshipped here mainly as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance, whose cosmic dance (ananda tandava) is believed to sustain the universe. For Shaivas in Tamil Nadu, Chidambaram is simply "Koyil", the temple, and it is one of the most important centres of Shaiva worship and of classical dance.

According to tradition, the sages Patanjali and Vyaghrapada prayed in the Thillai forest to witness Shiva's dance, and Shiva performed the ananda tandava for them here. The temple holds the "Chidambara Rahasyam" (secret of Chidambaram): behind a curtain in the sanctum is an empty space hung with a garland of golden bilva leaves, representing Shiva as formless space. The temple is praised in the Tevaram hymns and was richly endowed by the Chola kings, who are said to have gilded the roof of the main hall; it was further expanded by the Pandyas, the Vijayanagara rulers and others. Worship is traditionally conducted by the hereditary Dikshitar priests.

The complex covers a large area with four tall gopurams, the eastern and western ones carved with the 108 karanas, the dance postures of the Natya Shastra. At its centre is the Chit Sabha or Kanaka Sabha, the golden-roofed hall housing the bronze Nataraja with Goddess Sivakami. Other halls include the Nritta Sabha, shaped like a chariot, and the thousand-pillared Raja Sabha. Within the complex is a shrine of Govindaraja Perumal, a Vishnu form counted among the Divya Desams, and the large Sivaganga tank.
