About Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple

The Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Thiruparankundram stands at the foot of a tall rocky hill in a suburb about 8 km from the centre of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It is the first of the Arupadaiveedu, the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, and the ancient poem Tirumurukarruppadai names it first in its list. Here Murugan is worshipped together with his consort Deivanai. The temple is also a Paadal Petra Sthalam, sung by the 7th-century Saiva saint Sambandar, and holds shrines of Shiva, Vishnu, Durga and Ganesha side by side, which draws both Shaiva and Vaishnava devotees. It is managed by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.

According to tradition, after Murugan defeated the demon Surapadman at Tiruchendur, he married Deivanai, the daughter of Indra, at this spot; Murugan is also said to have worshipped his father Shiva here as Parangirinathar. History records that the Pandya kings cut the original shrine into the rock in the 6th century CE. Older Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions in natural caverns on the hilltop date to around the 1st century BCE. Sources say the shrine passed through a Jain phase and was restored to Hindu worship in the late 8th century, and the Madurai Nayaks later added grand pillared halls.

A seven-tiered rajagopuram, about 46 metres tall, marks the entrance. Inside, the Nayaka-period Aasthaana Mandapam has richly carved pillars and life-size sculptures. Three halls rise at different levels towards the sanctum, the last reached by a short flight of six steps. The main shrine is carved directly into the rock, with cells for Murugan, Durga, Ganesha, Shiva and Vishnu, and Shiva and Vishnu face each other. Panels of Shiva's dance decorate the outer walls. The temple tank, Saravana Poigai, is one of five water bodies, and devotees feed its fish. A Kasi Viswanathar shrine sits on top of the hill.
