About Tiruchendur Murugan Temple
The Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Tiruchendur stands right on the shore of the Bay of Bengal in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. It is one of the Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, and is usually counted as the second. It is the only one of the six on the seashore; the others are on hills or inland. Waves wash up close to the temple, and pilgrims bathe in the sea before darshan.
According to the Skanda Purana and Tamil tradition, Murugan came to Tiruchendur with his army to fight the demon Surapadman. After a long battle, he split the demon with his spear (vel); one half became the peacock that is his vehicle and the other the rooster on his banner. After the victory, Murugan worshipped Shiva here, and the main murti is shown holding a lotus in a posture of worship. The battle is re-enacted every year at Soorasamharam, the climax of the Skanda Shashti festival, on the beach in front of the temple. The temple has long been a major pilgrim centre, and the present structure has grown over several centuries.
Unusually, the main rajagopuram, with nine tiers, stands on the western side rather than facing the sea, while the sanctum faces east towards the ocean. Inside are shrines to Murugan as Subramaniya, to Valli and Deivanai, and to other deities, and a shrine of Murugan as Shanmukha with six faces. Near the temple is the Nazhi Kinaru, a small well that gives fresh water despite being so close to the sea, and the Valli Guhai, a cave associated with Murugan's consort Valli.
