About Vishnupad Temple
The Vishnupad Temple stands on the west bank of the Falgu river in the old city of Gaya in Bihar. It enshrines a footprint of Lord Vishnu, about 40 cm long, imprinted in a block of basalt. Gaya is the most important place in India for pind daan and shraddha, rites offered for the peace of departed ancestors, and the Vishnupad Temple is the centre of these rites. Hindus from every part of the country come here, especially during Pitru Paksha, to honour their forefathers.
According to the Gaya Mahatmya in the Vayu Purana, a demon named Gayasura performed such severe penance that he became holier than any tirtha, and anyone who touched him was freed from sin. The gods asked him to offer his body as a place for a sacrifice, and Vishnu placed his foot on Gayasura's chest to keep him still. Gayasura asked that the place become holy, so that offerings made here would free the souls of the departed; the footprint marks this spot. The shrine is ancient, but the present temple was built in 1787 by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore.
The temple is built of grey granite in the Nagara style, with a tall shikhara rising to about 30 metres, crowned by a gold-coloured flag. The footprint, called the Dharmashila, lies in an octagonal basin plated with silver in the sanctum, where pilgrims make offerings. In front stands a large pillared hall. Inside the complex is the Akshayavat, an ancient banyan tree where the final part of the shraddha rites is performed. The ghats on the Falgu below the temple are busy with families performing rituals with the help of priests.
