Chitrakoot: integrated village development

At Chitrakoot, on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, Nanaji's teams worked village by village on agriculture, water, health, education, self-employment and the settling of disputes without going to court. Married couples were recruited as "samaj shilpi dampati" — social-architect couples — to live in villages and guide this work. The approach drew on Deendayal Upadhyaya's Integral Humanism and Gandhi's gram swaraj.

Legacy

Nanaji's retirement from politics at sixty is often cited as an example of putting work before power. The Deendayal Research Institute continues his development projects, and the Gramodaya university trains students for rural service.
