What it is

In Ujjayi the glottis at the back of the throat is slightly narrowed, so that each slow breath makes a soft, whispering sound. The sound gives the mind something to rest on and keeps the breath long and even, which is why it is used in many asana practices and before meditation.

How to practise

  1. Sit or lie comfortably. Keep the mouth closed and the face relaxed.
  2. Narrow the throat. Gently constrict the back of the throat, as if whispering "haaa" with the mouth closed.
  3. Breathe slowly. Inhale and exhale through the nose with a soft ocean sound, both breaths long and even.
  4. Continue. Practise for 5–10 minutes, keeping it relaxed, never forced.
