The story
Long ago King Uttanapada had two queens, Suniti and Suruchi, and two sons — Dhruva, son of Suniti, and Uttama, son of Suruchi. One day little Dhruva, only five years old, ran to climb into his father's lap. But Queen Suruchi pulled him away. "Only my son may sit there," she said. "If you want that seat, pray to Vishnu to be born as my son!"
Dhruva ran crying to his mother. Gentle Suniti hugged him and said, "Don't be angry, my son. Only Bhagavan Vishnu can give you what you truly want. Pray to him with all your heart."
So little Dhruva walked into the forest. On the way he met the sage Narada, who tried to send him home: "You are too young for this!" But Dhruva would not turn back. Seeing his determination, Narada taught him the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" and showed him how to meditate.
By the river Yamuna, Dhruva prayed day and night. He ate less and less, then only drank water, then stood on one foot, thinking only of Vishnu. His prayer was so powerful that the whole world felt it. At last Vishnu appeared before him, smiling, riding Garuda.
Dhruva was so happy he could not even speak. Vishnu touched his cheek with his conch, and words of praise flowed from the boy's lips. "You will rule your father's kingdom," said Vishnu, "and afterwards you will shine for ever as Dhruva Tara, the pole star, around which all the other stars turn."
Dhruva returned home. His father welcomed him with tears of joy, and even Suruchi asked for forgiveness. Today, when we look at the night sky, the star that never moves is Dhruva — the boy who never gave up.
