The story

Krishna and Sudama were best friends when they studied together at the ashram of their teacher Sandipani. Krishna grew up to be the king of Dwarka, but Sudama remained very poor. Sometimes his family did not have enough to eat.

One day his wife said, "Your friend Krishna is a king. Go and see him — perhaps he will help us." Sudama did not like to ask for anything, but he agreed to visit his old friend. He had nothing to take as a gift except a handful of flattened rice (poha) tied in a cloth.

When Sudama reached Krishna's golden palace, he felt shy in his torn clothes. But as soon as Krishna saw him, he ran barefoot to the gate, hugged him with tears of joy, seated him on his own throne and washed his feet. Then Krishna asked, "What have you brought me?" Shy Sudama tried to hide the poha, but Krishna took it and ate it happily, saying it was the most delicious gift he had ever received.

Sudama was so happy to be with his friend that he forgot to ask for anything. On the way home he worried about what to tell his wife. But when he reached his village, he found a beautiful house in place of his hut, and his family happy and well. Krishna had understood without a word.

What we learn
