What Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti means

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti — his Prakash Purab — honours the tenth Sikh Guru, poet, warrior and founder of the Khalsa. Sikh tradition celebrates it according to the lunar calendar on Paush Shukla Saptami, so the date moves each year in December or January.

Guru Gobind Singh gave the Sikh community its distinct form, the Khalsa, and its eternal Guru, the Guru Granth Sahib. His life of courage, faith and sacrifice in the face of persecution — including the martyrdom of his father and all four sons — is honoured far beyond the Sikh community.

The story of Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti

Gobind Rai was born at Patna in 1666. When he was nine, his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, was executed in Delhi for defending the right of Kashmiri Pandits and others to practise their faith; Gobind Rai became the tenth Guru.

On Vaisakhi in 1699 at Anandpur he called for volunteers ready to give their heads for their faith; the five who came forward became the Panj Pyare, the first members of the Khalsa, and he himself took initiation from them, becoming Gobind Singh. In the wars that followed, his two elder sons died in battle at Chamkaur, and his two younger sons were bricked alive at Sirhind. Before his death at Nanded in 1708 he declared that the Guru Granth Sahib would be the Guru for all time.
