What Vasant Panchami means
Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of the bright half of Magha, is the first breath of spring. The mustard fields of North India turn yellow, the cold begins to lift, and the whole festival takes on that colour: yellow clothes, yellow flowers, saffron rice and yellow sweets.
Above all it is the day of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, speech, music and the arts — so much so that in Bengal, Odisha and much of the east it is simply called Saraswati Puja or Shri Panchami. Students place their books and pens before her, musicians their instruments, artists their brushes, and small children are guided to write their first letters. The day is considered so auspicious that it is counted as an 'abujh muhurat' — a day on which good beginnings need no further astrological checking.
The festival also opens the season of Holi: in Braj the Holi festivities formally begin on Vasant Panchami, forty days before the colours, and in Punjab and North India the sky fills with kites. It is a day for beginnings — to start learning something new, to honour teachers, and to put knowledge in the service of goodness.
The story of Vasant Panchami
One well-known account says that after Brahma created the world it lay silent and lifeless. He sprinkled water from his kamandalu, and Saraswati appeared, holding the veena, a book and a rosary. When she played the veena, all creation received sound and speech — the rivers began to flow with a murmur, the wind to rustle and the birds to sing. Tradition keeps Vasant Panchami as the day of her appearance.
Spring itself is honoured too: Kama, the god of love, and his companion Vasanta (spring) are remembered at this time, and in some regions the day is linked with the season of Rati and Kamadeva. In the Gita Krishna says, 'of the seasons I am the flower-bearing spring' (10.35), and Vasant Panchami is the threshold of that season.
Vasant Panchami puja vidhi, step by step
A simple Saraswati puja for home or school. Bengal, Odisha and South India each have their own customs — follow your family's tradition where it differs.
What you need
- An image or picture of Saraswati, on a clean cloth (white or yellow)
- Books, pens, notebooks and musical instruments to place before her
- Yellow and white flowers, especially marigold; mango blossoms if available
- Haldi, kumkum, akshat, sandalwood paste, a diya and incense
- Yellow sweets — kesar halwa, boondi or sweet saffron rice — and seasonal fruits such as ber
- A slate and chalk, or rice spread on a plate, for a child's first letters
When to do the puja
Saraswati puja is done in the morning (purvahna) of Magha Shukla Panchami. Exact tithi times change by city and year — check the Panchang for your city. See the Panchang for your city.
Steps
- Prepare. Bathe, wear yellow or white, and set up Saraswati's image with books, pens and instruments in front of it.
- Invoke Saraswati. Light the lamp and offer flowers, haldi, kumkum and akshat while reciting the Saraswati vandana below.
- Offer and pray. Offer the yellow sweets and fruits, and pray for clear understanding, good speech and the right use of knowledge.
- Begin learning. Guide a young child to write 'ॐ' or their first letters (vidyarambh). Older students often read or recite something, and musicians play a few notes.
- Close with aarti. Perform aarti and share the prasad. In many homes books stay before Saraswati for the day, and study resumes the next morning.
