Explanation
The list continues: non-violence, even-mindedness, contentment, austerity, charity, fame and disgrace. All these varied states of beings, Krishna says, arise from him alone. Together with the previous verse, this names twenty qualities, good and bad, honourable and painful, and traces every one of them back to a single source.
Shankara and Ramanuja both read mattaḥ eva, from me alone, as the key phrase: the Lord is the ground from which all mental states come, while each being experiences them according to its own past actions. Commentators note that virtues like ahiṃsā, samatā and dāna are listed alongside fame and infamy, which depend on others. The teaching prepares Arjuna for the vibhūti list later in the chapter: if even our inner qualities come from the Divine, then the whole world can be seen as his expression.
Living it today
Take your good qualities as gifts to be used, not trophies to be proud of. That keeps praise and blame from shaking you.
