Explanation

There, in the body of the God of gods, the son of Pandu then saw the entire universe, with all its many divisions, gathered in one place. Arjuna beholds the whole cosmos, in all its variety, contained in Krishna's form.

The verse fulfils Krishna's invitation in 11.7. The key idea is unity in diversity: the universe is 'divided in many ways' yet 'resting in one'. Shankara sees here the one reality appearing as many; Ramanuja reads it as the world being the body of God, distinct yet inseparable from him, a central idea of Vishishtadvaita. The title 'God of gods' (devadeva) underlines that all the deities seen are within this one Lord.

Living it today

Behind all the divisions you see — of nation, belief or class — try to remember the one whole they belong to.
