Explanation

I see you crowned, bearing mace and discus, a mass of radiance shining on every side, hard to look upon, blazing all around with the brilliance of fire and sun, beyond all measure. Arjuna recognises Vishnu's emblems within the overwhelming light.

The crown, mace and discus are the familiar emblems of Vishnu, so within the cosmic vision Arjuna still sees signs of the Lord he knows; he will ask for this crowned form again in 11.46. Yet the light is so intense that it is 'hard to gaze upon'. Commentators see here both closeness and distance: the Divine is recognisable and loving, yet beyond measure (aprameya). The image of blazing fire and sun prepares for the fiercer visions to come.

Living it today

The Divine can feel both familiar and far beyond us; let devotion keep both closeness and reverence.
