Explanation

The whole space between heaven and earth, and all the directions, are filled by you alone. O great one, seeing this wondrous and terrible form of yours, the three worlds tremble. Arjuna sees the Lord filling all space and feels the fear of all creation.

Here wonder and terror meet: the form is both adbhuta, wondrous, and ugra, fierce. 'The three worlds tremble' expresses how overwhelming the vision is. Shankara and other commentators note that Arjuna projects his own fear onto the worlds; others read it literally as the reaction of all beings. The verse captures a theme of religious experience found in many traditions: when the Divine is truly encountered, it is both fascinating and frightening, beyond comfortable images of God.
