Explanation

Devouring all the worlds on every side with your flaming mouths, you lick your lips. Your fierce rays fill the whole universe with radiance and scorch it, O Vishnu. The vision of the Lord as the consumer of all reaches its height.

The image of licking the lips is meant to shock; it shows destruction as effortless for the cosmic power, as a meal is for a living being. Commentators relate it to the Upanishadic idea that the Lord is the 'eater' (atta) of the whole world, for whom all beings are food (Brahma Sutra 1.2.9 discusses this). The address Vishnu, 'the all-pervader', reminds us that the same God who sustains is the one who withdraws all things.

Living it today

Everything we hold is temporary; let that make you generous now instead of anxious about losing it later.
