Explanation
Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna and the other great warriors have already been slain by me; you slay them. Do not be distressed. Fight — you will conquer your rivals in battle. Krishna names the most feared opponents and assures Arjuna of the outcome.
These four were the warriors Arjuna most feared or most revered: Drona his teacher, Bhishma his grandsire, and Jayadratha and Karna, each believed protected by special powers or boons. Commentators explain that Krishna names them to remove Arjuna's specific anxieties. The verse completes 11.33's teaching of being an 'instrument': the decisive cause lies in the cosmic order, and Arjuna's task is to do his part without dread. Gandhi and others read the battle allegorically, as the inner struggle against one's own lower tendencies.
