Explanation

You are Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varuna, the moon, Prajapati, and the great-grandsire of all. Salutations, salutations to you a thousand times, and again and yet again, salutations to you. Overwhelmed, Arjuna can only bow again and again. His words of praise dissolve into repeated salutation.

Arjuna names the great deities of nature and order — wind, death, fire, waters, moon and the lord of creatures — and sees them all as Krishna. 'Great-grandsire' is explained by commentators thus: Brahma is the grandsire (pitamaha) of beings, and Krishna is the source even of Brahma. The repeated 'namo namah' expresses devotion that words can no longer contain. This verse and the next are widely chanted in temples and homes as a hymn of salutation.

Living it today

When gratitude overflows, simple repetition is enough; a bowed head often says what long speeches cannot.
