Explanation

Salutations to you in front and behind; salutations to you on every side, O All. You are of infinite strength and boundless valour; you pervade everything, and so you are everything. Arjuna bows in every direction, since the Lord is everywhere.

Because the Lord is not in one place, Arjuna bows before, behind and on all sides. The closing words, 'you pervade all, therefore you are all', give the reasoning: what fills everything is everything. Shankara reads this as the non-difference of Brahman and the world; Ramanuja reads it as the world being the body of God, so that he is called 'the All' as the soul of all. The verse is often chanted together with 11.39.
