Explanation
Therefore, bowing down and laying my body before you, I seek your grace, O Lord worthy of all praise. As a father bears with his son, a friend with his friend, a lover with his beloved, so please bear with me, O God. Arjuna asks to be forgiven out of love.
Arjuna prostrates fully, the body laid down in surrender. He then appeals to three relationships of love in which faults are overlooked: parent and child, friend and friend, lover and beloved. Bhakti traditions later developed these very relationships as ways of loving God. Commentators note that Arjuna does not ask for forgiveness as a stranger begs a king, but as one who is already loved. The prayer shows that awe of God's greatness need not destroy intimacy.
