Explanation

I wish to see you as before, crowned, bearing mace and discus in hand. O thousand-armed one, O universal form, take on again that four-armed form. Arjuna asks specifically for the four-armed form of Vishnu. He longs for a form of the Lord he can bear to look upon and love.

The request raises a question commentators have long discussed: why four-armed, when Krishna appeared as a man with two arms? Ramanuja and many Vaishnava teachers hold that the four-armed form is Krishna's own divine form, which Arjuna had perhaps seen or known of. Others, including Shankara, simply take it as the gentle form of Vishnu, contrasted with the thousand-armed cosmic form. Many readers understand 11.50 and 11.51 to mean that Krishna showed the four-armed form and then returned to his human form.
