Explanation

Do not be afraid, and do not be bewildered at seeing this terrible form of mine. Free from fear and with a glad heart, behold once again that same form of mine. Krishna gently comforts the frightened Arjuna and promises to show him his familiar form again.

After the overwhelming vision, Krishna's tone becomes tender. The two words 'ma vyatha' (no distress) and 'ma vimudha-bhava' (no bewilderment) address both the emotional fear and the mental confusion Arjuna confessed in 11.24 to 11.25 and 11.45. 'That same form' is understood by commentators as the gentle form Arjuna asked for in 11.46. The verse shows the Divine not only as awesome power but as a friend who soothes. It is often quoted as an assurance that God does not leave the devotee in terror.

Living it today

After a frightening experience, let yourself be comforted; return to what is gentle and familiar, and let fear give way to gladness.
