Explanation
The Lord said: behold, O Partha, my forms by the hundreds and thousands, divine, of many kinds, of countless colours and shapes. Krishna grants the request and invites Arjuna to look upon his manifold forms. The vision begins not with terror but with beauty and variety beyond counting.
From here Krishna begins to unfold the vision. The repeated word 'behold' (pashya) runs through verses 5 to 8 like a summons. Commentators note that the forms are not separate gods but aspects of the one Lord, as chapter 10 already suggested when it said all splendour springs from a spark of his glory (10.41). The variety of colour and shape points to the whole diversity of the universe held within one being.
