sarvatrāvasthito dehe tathātmā nopalipyate ||

Meaning in English

Just as all-pervading space, being subtle, is not tainted by anything, so the Self, present everywhere in the body, is not tainted.

Explanation

Just as all-pervading space, because of its subtlety, is not tainted by anything, so the self, present everywhere in the body, is never tainted. Like the sky, which holds clouds and smoke without being stained, the self remains pure though it pervades the body.

Space holds smoke, dust and perfume alike without being changed by any of them. The self likewise pervades the body and all its activities without being marked by them. This image of space, akasha, is a favourite in Advaita teaching, and Shankara uses it often. It answers the worry that contact with a body full of desires must surely affect the spirit.

Living it today

Like the sky above a storm, a calm part of you stays untouched by the day's noise. Return to it when things get heavy.
